Mele: Ke Aui Nei Ka La
Style: Kanikau

In this papa, participants will learn sounds and rhythms of kanikau, a genre of lamentation and grief practices composed to simultaneously honor and mourn the subject's passing while showcasing the intimate relationship between the composer and the subject. Participants will learn the mele "Ke Aui Nei Ka La" a short-form kanikau which offers insights into aesthetics of kanikau.

Bio: Daniel Kauwila Mahi, is an ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi rapper, songwriter, and sound designer from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. His compositions interpolates and remixes ancestral chants and instrumentation underscoring the many rhythm of of Hawaiʻi.
