A new road to the summit of Haleakalā was opened in the 1920s.  This song, which may have been written shortly afterwards, describes a malihini's trip up that 12 mile long alanui.  12 miles is not usually a long way -- unless your car is making a twisting, turning 10,000 foot clumb at the same time!  And remember,  the cars in the 1920s were much less equipped and not nearly as fast as the cars of today, and there were no highways to shorten the travel time, as there are today.
