Mele: Maui o Kama
Style: Auana

This version of "Maui o Kama" comes from the collection of Aunty Vickie ʻĪʻī Rodrigues as I learned it in the 1980s from Uncle Kawai Cockett, who learned it from Aunty Vickie in the 1960s. This mele celebrates and reminds us of important people and events in Maui's history: Kamalālāwalu, a late 16th century Maui chief who was kind, just, and hospitable; Piʻilani, the grandfather of Kamalālāwalu, who was loved by the people of Maui for his good and wise government; KepaniwaioʻĪao, Maluokeao, and the roselani on the alahele.
